ダイバーシティの欠如で、論争の的となっているオスカーの授賞式の次に行われるカンヌ国際映画祭において、アフリカ系米国人が審査員長を務めるのは同映画祭史上、初めてとなる。
「審査員長に任命された時、私は信じられなかったが、同時に、アフリカのディアスポラの初めての代表であることに満足し、そして誇り高い気持ちがこみあげてきた。」とスパイク・リー氏は語った。
彼は、2018年には作品「ブラック・クランズマン」でグランプリを受賞し、黒人を擁護したことは知られている。
また、2016年にはアカデミー賞の演技部門の候補者20人が2年連続で全員白人だったことに抗議して、彼は、「我々は演技ができないということか。なんということだ。」と、アカデミー賞の授賞式を欠席する意向を明らかにしたこともあった。
カンヌ映画祭のピエール・レスキュール会長とティエリー・フレモー代表は、「今まさにスパイク・リー監督の視点が必要なときである。」と説明。「スパイク・リーの任命を非常に満足している。カンヌは、様々な人々の姿勢や信念において心を呼び覚ます世界的なインスピレーションの場である。スパイク・リーの存在が華やぐことを約束する。」と述べた。
第73回カンヌ国際映画祭は5月12日から23日まで開催される。
Following the controversial Oscar’s nomination ceremony for its lack of diversity, Cannes Festival decided to appoint Spike Lee as the first Black Jury President of the ceremony.
“When I was called to become president of the jury, I couldn’t believe it, I was happy, surprised and proud at the same time to be the first representative of the African diaspora,” said Spike Lee.
Awarded in 2018 of the Cannes Film Festival grand prize for his film BlacKkKlansman, Spike Lee is known for his defense of the Black cause.
In 2016, he boycotted the Oscar ceremony deemed too White for him.
“But, how is it possible for the second consecutive year all 20 contenders under the acting category are white? And let’s not even get into the other branches. Forty white actors in two years and no flava at all. We can’t act?! WTF!!,” said Spike Lee at that time.
Pierre Lescure, president of the festival and Thierry Frémaux, the general delegate, are very pleased with Spike Lee’s appointment “Spike Lee’s perception is more precious than ever. Cannes is a natural safe haven and a worldwide inspiration for those who awaken their minds and question everyone in their postures and beliefs. The flamboyant personality of Spike Lee promises a lot”.
The festival will be held from May 12 to May 23.
