アイルランドの教育大臣によって承認された女性のみで構成された教授陣20人は、アカデミー内における性別不均衡の緩和を目指している。
「この政府介入によってジェンダーバランスの改善が速く進み、現在の我々の機関において最高レベルの女性代表に対応できることを非常に誇りに思っている」と、高等教育大臣のメアリー・ミッチェル・オコナーは述べた。
この取り組みは、当初は2018年の実施が計画されていたが、法的許可の関係で2020年になり、9月から始まる次年度に向けて優秀な志願者が集まるべく準備をしている。
募集は、女性、科学、技術、工学分野で、これら最も過小評価されている分野に焦点を当てている。
現在、新人講師職の51％、上級教授職の24％をしている。
アイルランドの400年以上にわたる高等教育の歴史の中で、女性が大学の学長の地位に就くことはなかった。
「この取り組みは、募集と昇進に関する方針の中心に、常に’優秀さ’を置くようにしている。これらの分野で活躍するために障害となるようなジェンダー不均衡に対処し、改善に向けて積極的な措置をすでに取り始めている高等教育機関を支援している」。
Approved by the Irish Minister of Education, a 20 female only professorship aimed to close the gender imbalance in the country Academy.
“I am incredibly proud that this intervention will ensure a swifter gender re-balance, addressing the current representation of women at the highest levels of our institutions,” said Mary Mitchell O’Connor, Minister of State for Higher Education.
The initiative, originally intended for 2018 but delayed to 2020 due to legal clearance, expects to have the successful applicants ready for the next academic year starting in September.
The recruitment focus on the most underrepresented areas by females, science, technology and engineering.
Currently, females hold 51% of the entry-level lecturer positions and only 24% of the senior professorships positions in the Irish academies.
It is also reported, in the 400 years of higher level education history of Ireland, that a female has never held the university president position.
“This initiative is supporting higher education institutions that are already taking proactive steps to address gender imbalance to take a leap forward in this area, always with ‘excellence’ at the heart of recruitment and promotion policies,” said O’Connor.
