ナイジェリア空軍は初めて女性2人を組織に迎え入れた。戦闘機を指揮する将校のカファイアット・サンニ(Kafayat Sanni)と戦闘ヘリコプター担当のトルロプ・アロタイル(Tolulope Arotile)の2人だ。
13人のパイロットのうち、2人が正規士官だ。彼女らは士官であるだけじゃなく、素晴らしいパイロットでもあると、空軍チーフで中将でもあるサディク・アブバカール(Sadique Abubakar)は述べた。
この女性パイロットたちは55年に及ぶナイジェリア空軍の歴史において、初めて女性戦闘員として任命された人たちだ。彼女たちは式典において女性問題を扱う省の大臣であるポーリン・タレン（Pauline Tallen）によって命を受けた。
ナイジェリアは軍隊内における女性の存在を高め、他の国にもこの流れを奨励するようなロールモデルになることをのぞんでいる。
2010年、当時のナイジェリア大統領であるグッドラック・ジョナサン（Goodluck Jonathan）は、ナイジェリア防衛大学校に対して女性を受け入れるよう要請した。翌年、20人の女性が入学許可を得た。
「全ての人に役割がある。だから私は過去に女性パイロットがいなかったからという理由で自分もパイロットにはなれないとは思わなかった。自分はパイロットになれると信じていたし、そして実際になれた」とサンニは述べる。
The NAF (Nigerian Air Force) welcomed its two first female in the Air Forces, Officer Kafayat Sanni in command of a fighter jet and Tolulope Arotile in command of a combat helicopter.
“Out of the 13 pilots to be winged are two female Regular Combatant officers. Not only are they female officers, but they are also outstanding aviators,” said The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.
The new female pilots were inducted, as first female fighter in the 55 years history of the NAF, in a ceremony attended by the Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Pauline Tallen.
Nigeria hopes to be a role model in Africa to encourage other countries to accept more gender representation in their army forces.
In 2010, the then Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, ordered the NDA (Nigerian Defense Academy), to accept female in their ranks. The following year, 20 females were admitted in the Academy.
“Everyone could always play their part. So, I did not think there was any reason for me to think that it is not possible for me to actually fly the jet because there was no female that ever flew the jet. I believe I could achieve it and I did,” said Sanni.
