平等・人権委員会（EHRC）は、高齢者と障害者が公共交通機関で差別に直面した時、彼らが法的措置を取るためのサポートとして、新しい基金を立ち上げる予定だ。
この基金はまだ公的には発表されていないが、EHRCはすでに出資者たちや障害者協会にこの基金を使えるようにするため、交渉に入っている。
このプロジェクトは、高齢者や障害者が差別に対して法的措置を取りたいと思ったときに弁護士費用をカバーする形で支援してくれる。
年間計画でも触れられているが、ERHCは高齢者と障害者のインクルージョンを経済的・社会的にサポートすることに努めている。
「障害者たちは公共交通機関を使うたびにイヤな思いをさせられている。これは交通手段を提供する側が、法律に基づく平等を達成していないことが原因でもある。我々は、障害者の人たちが、もし本来使えるべきサービスを拒否された場合、このような状況に対して使える政策や手続き、たとえば苦情受付システムなどを全て使うよう促している」と、イギリスの障害者人権団体「Disability Rights UK」 CEOのカムラン・マリック(Kamran Mallick)は述べる。
The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) will create new funding to help elder and disabled people to take legal action when facing discrimination in public transportation.
The fund hasn’t been officially announced yet, but the EHRC has already approached stakeholders and disability associations to make this fund possible.
The project will financially cover the cost of lawyers representing the elders and/or disabled people willing to take actions against discrimination.
As referred to its annual business plan, the ERHC is committed to “supports the economic and social inclusion of disabled people and older people”.
“Disabled people are persistently frustrated in their efforts to use public transport, in part because of the failure of transport providers to meet their responsibilities under equalities legislation. We’d encourage disabled people to use all the policies and procedures available to them, such as complaints systems, if they are denied the services they should be able to use,” said Kamran Mallick, the CEO of Disability Rights UK.
