8月22日水曜日、ニュージーランドの議会は新しいメンバーを迎え入れた。
ツタネカイ(Tutanekai)という名の新生児で、マオリ族の議員であるタマティ・コフィー(Tamati Coffey)氏が男性パートナーであるティム・スミス(Tim Smith)氏との間にもうけた子である。この子が議会に参加し、トレバー・マラード(Trevor Mallard)議長の膝上に抱っこされていた。
全ての議員がこれを歓迎、議場の平均年齢が一気に下がったことを楽しんだ。
ニュージーランドにおける政治の場において、赤ちゃんが登場するのは初めてではない。
ニュージーランドのジャシンダ・アーダーン(Jacinda Ardern)首相は選挙の数か月後に女の子を出産している。その後、彼女は2018年9月に生後3か月の娘を連れて国連総会に出席した。
2019年2月に公表されたフランスの調査によると、69％の母親が出産後に職場を変えざるをえなかったそうだ。同じ状況において職場を変えた男性は29％に過ぎない。
On Wednesday 22 August, the New Zealand Parliament welcomed a new member in its hemicycle.
The newborn named Tutanekai, son of Tamati Coffey, a Maori MP and his husband Tim Smith, took part in the Parliament session, sitting on the lap of the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Trevor Mallard.
All the elected officials welcomed this event in a positive way, enjoying a sudden drop of the average age in the hemicycle.
This is not the first time a New Zealander baby has taken part in the political scene.
Jacinda Ardern, the Prime Minister of New Zealand gave birth to her daughter a few months after her election. Later on, in September 2018 she took her at that time 3-month-old daughter to the UN General Assembly.
A French study published in February 2019 revealed that 69% of mothers had to change their work organization after the birth of their first child, against only 29% of fathers in the same situation.
