国連が新しく掲げた障害者戦略は、よりよい形で障害者と関わり合い、国連が彼らの味方となるようなものである。
「全ての人にとって国連がアクセスしやすいものであってほしい。とてもシンプルな話だ。もし障害者らがアクセスできないのであれば、我々は変化をもたらすようなプラットフォームになり得ない」と、国連事務総長であるアントニオ・グテーレス(António Guterres)は述べた。
この戦略は、障害者のインクルージョンという点において、彼らの雇用を増やし、またサポートできるよう、国連の機能を改善するものだ。グテーレス事務総長は、国連が障害者にとって就職先の選択肢の一つであってほしいと考えている。
この戦略は、当初義務としてグテーレス主導で行われた包括的な国連障害者包摂再検討の結果から得られたものである。調査により、国連の全ての活動において障害者に対するインクルージョンがあまりに欠如していることが明らかになった。
