中国系オーストラリアのシンクタンクは、オーストラリア政府に対して、政党内で20％の人種割当を導入するよう求めた。
シンクタンクによると、中国系オーストラリア人は、中国共産党の影響を受けているという強い認識を持たれている為、政治的 指導的立場からしばしば拒否されている。
また、政党におけるダイバーシティに関する利用可能なデータが不足しているといった別の問題も報告された。
中国問題研究員のOsmond Chiu氏は、「政党は文化的ダイバーシティについて広く情報収集していない。私たちがどれほど過小評価されているか示すべきデータすら持っていない」 と述べた。
Chiu氏によると、オーストラリア連邦議員の96％以上がヨーロッパ出身であり、（主要な連邦国家においては、ヨーロッパ出身はカナダでは85%、英国とニュージーランドでは10％）オーストラリアの人口の24％は非ヨーロッパ系出身である。
反中国感情の不満で政治をやめたJieh-Yung Lo元モナッシュ副市長は、「権力と影響力のある地位にいる人が、まわりを見ない限り、それらのステレオタイプや違いを一掃することはできない。私たちは単一文化機関を備えた多文化の国である」述べた。
A Chinese-Australian think tank is asking the Australian government to introduce 20% racial quota for the political parties.
The think tank called China Matters also states Chinese are often denied from leadership positions in politic due to the misconceptions that the Communist Party influences Chinese.
Another problem revealed by the think tank is the lack of available data regarding diversity in political parties.
“Political parties broadly don’t collect information on the cultural diversity of their parties. We are at a point where we don’t even have the data to say how underrepresented we are,” said Osmond Chiu from China Matters.
According to Chiu more than 96% of the Australian’s MPs have an European background, the highest percentage in the main commonwealth countries, with 85% in Canada and 10% in the UK and New-Zealand.
However, 24% of the Australian population is from a non-European background.
“Unless you see people that look like you in positions of power and influence, we can never brush away those stereotypes and differences. We’re a multicultural country with mono-cultural institutions,” said Jieh-Yung Lo former deputy mayor of Monash who quit politics after exasperation of anti-Chinese sentiment.
