ロイター通信によると、アメリカン航空、ナイキ、デル、アマゾンなど36の企業がLGBTコミュニティを除外するような法律の制定をやめるよう議員に求めている。そのような法律は経済を脅かすからだ。
「議員は、LGBTQの人々を標的とする、または排除するような法律を追求しないよう我々からお願いしたい。国家がすべての人々を歓迎していないことを示す政策は、我々の集団としての経済的成功を危機にさらしている」。
現在、アメリカの50州のうち30州では、宗教的信念を保護する法律のため、トランスジェンダーや性的指向に対する差別を禁止していない。
マイク・ペンス副大統領のような非常に保守的な人間や、福音派の代表者が率いるトランプ政権ではこの問題が解決することはないだろう。さらに、上院での投票を待つLGBTコミュニティの法的保護を目的とした新しい平等法は、共和党が過半数を超えるため、可決されそうにない。
その結果、多くの企業がLGBTコミュニティを包摂するため、各企業でそれぞれイニシアチブを取ることになる。多くの研究が業績の高さや顧客への求心力、才能を企業で保有するLGBT包摂の利点を強調している。
さらに、2016年のノースカロライナ州でトランスジェンダーの人々が出生証明書の性別に従ってトイレを使用することを要求する「トイレ法案」の採択後のように、差別政策が経済に大きな影響を与える可能性がある。ノースカロライナではこの法律の制定後、多くの企業、歌手、映画監督などが州に対してボイコットを起こし、2019年に法律が廃止されるまで何十億もの損失をもたらした。
As reported by Thompson Reuters, 36 companies including American Airlines, Nike, Dell or even Amazon are asking the lawmakers to stop legislations excluding the LGBT community as it puts the economy at risk.
“We ask that lawmakers not pursue any further legislation that would target or exclude LGBTQ people. Policies that signal that the state is not welcoming to everyone put our collective economic success at risk.”
Currently, 30 out of the 50 American states do not outlaw discrimination toward gender identity and sexual orientation, often due to laws that protect religious belief.
The Trump administration lead by highly conservatives and evangelicals representatives like the Vice President Mike Pence does not help with the issue. In addition, the Equality Act, a new legislation which aims to provide legal protection for the LGBT community awaiting a vote in the Senate is unlikely to pass due to its Republican majority.
As a result, many companies take personal initiatives to include the LGBT community as many studies highlight the benefits of LGBT inclusion for economic performance, attracting customers and retaining talents.
Moreover, discriminatory policies can have big impacts on the economy, as was the case in North Carolina in 2016 after the adoption of the “Bathroom Bill” requiring transgender people to use the bathroom according to their birth certificate’s gender. In consequences many companies, singers, movie directors and others boycotted the state resulting in billions of losses until the repealing of the law in 2019.
