イギリスの新聞「The Guardian」は、教養のある白人女性が、自分たちが人種差別主義者であることを説明されるためにお金を払っていると報じている。
「Race to Dinner 夕食に人種を」のコンセプトのもと、一人の白人女性がボランティアでディナーを企画、見ず知らずの七人の白人女性たちとその場に集まり、アメリカの人種問題について話し合う。 プロジェクトの企画者である二人の女性、アフリカ系アメリカ人のレジーナ・ジャクソン(Regina Jackson)とインド系アメリカ人であるサイラ・ラオ(Saira Rao)がこの$ 2,500かかる夕食会を主催している。（費用はホストや参加者たちによって賄われる）
「最近、私は車を運転している時に黒人を見かけて、彼らは役に立たないと思ってしまったの。 でもすぐに、そういう風に考えちゃダメ、 彼らも同じ人間、 なぜ私はそんな風に思うの？と自問したわ」と参加者の一人。
人種差別はしばしば無意識だ。 この夕食会の目的は、主に進歩的な民主党支持者である白人女性が己の無意識の偏見を克服し、メンタリティを変えるのを手助けすることだ。
ロアとジャクソンは、白人男性がこの状況を変えられるとは思っていない。 一方、白人女性は変化を起こすことができると考えている。「彼女たち自身に地位がなくても、権力のある白人男性は彼女たちの家族や友人、パートナーだったりする」とジャクソンは言う。
これまでのところ、ロアとジャクソンは約15回に及ぶ夕食会を開いた。 しかし、参加者の女性たちはこの二人に対し批判も提起。彼女たちがしばしば攻撃的、あるいは挑発的であり、目的を忘れて歴史的事実を歪曲することもあると述べたのだ。 その一方で、このような批判があるにもかかわらず、ほとんどの参加者たちが人種問題に関する行動と考え方を変える彼女たちの方法は、自分たちが変わる手助けになったことに同意した。
British newspaper “The Guardian” reports that more and more white and educated women pay to be explained why they are racists.
Under the concept of “Race to Dinner”, a white woman volunteers to organize a dinner to seven other white women, who don’t know each other, to discuss racial issues in the United States. The two founders of the project, Regina Jackson, an African-American, and Saira Rao, who identifies as an Indian-American, lead the $2.500 dinner (covered by the host or divided between the participants).
“Recently, I have been driving around, seeing a black person, and having an assumption that they are up to no good. Immediately after I am like, that’s no good! This is a human, just doing their thing. Why do I think that?,” said one of the participant.
Racism is often unconscious. The purpose of these dinners is to help these white women, mostly progressives Democrats, to overcome their unconscious biases and change their mentalities.
Roa and Jackson don’t believe white men can change the situation, ‘’if it was the case they would have done it by now’’ commented Jackson. On the other hand, white women can lead the change. “If they don’t hold these positions themselves, the white men in power are often their family, friends and partners,” said Jackson.
So far, Roa and Jackson organized around 15 dinners. However, participants raised criticism regarding the 2 conversation leaders, stating they are often aggressive or provocative and sometimes distorted historic facts if they don’t serve their purpose. On the other hand, most participants, despite these criticisms, agreed it helped them in a way to change their behavior and mentality regarding racial issues.
