昨年のビル・ピータース(Bill Peters)のスキャンダルを受け、北米アイスホッケーリーグは強制プログラムを作ることに決めた。このプログラムはダイバーシティ＆インクルージョンの意識を高めるため、メジャー・マイナー両リーグのコーチ、マネージャー、アシスタント向けのものとなる。
元NHL選手のアキム・アリウ(Akim Aliu)が2009年から2010年にわたるシーズン中、当時のコーチであったビル・ピータースから日常的にNワードを使われていたとツイッターで告白。この非難は他の元選手たちによっても確認されており、ホッケー界で激しい抗議が起こった。
これに対し、NHLコミッショナーのギャリー・ブルース・ベットマン(Gary Bruce Bettman)は新たにトレーニングプログラムを作成、これを義務とすることでNHL雇用者によるさらなるハラスメントやいかなる差別も防ぐことに決めた。ベットマンはまた、ホットラインを創設することで、匿名で差別を報告することができるようにすると発表した。
「NHLに関連した不適切な指導例が報告されることがあれば、匿名であろうと特定の人物であろうと、我々は詳しく調べる必要がある。それが10年前に起こったものであろうと先週であろうと、答えは同じだ。受け入れられるものではない」とベットマンは述べる。
NHLは現在、選手向けに類似プログラムを作るため、選手協会と話し合いを重ねている。
Following last year Bill Peters’ scandal, the NHL (National Hockey League) decided to create a mandatory program affecting major and minor league coaches, managers and their assistants, in order to raise awareness regarding diversity and inclusion.
Last year, Akim Aliu, a former NHL player revealed on twitter that during the 2009-2010 season his team coach at that time Bill Peters often referred to him using the N words. This accusation, confirmed by other former co-players, caused outrage in the hockey world.
In reaction, Gary Bruce Bettman, NHL commissioner created a new mandatory training program to prevent further harassment or any form of discrimination performed by NHL employees.
He also announced the creation of a hotline allowing anonymous reports regarding any form of discrimination.
“Where instances of inappropriate conduct connected to the NHL can be reported, either anonymously or for attribution for us to follow up. Whether an incident happened 10 years ago or last week, the answer must be the same — it is unacceptable,” said Bettman.
The NHL is also currently speaking with the player association to create a similar program for players.
